For This

By Kate Lewington

rain streaked streets
puddles splashed through – excavated –
pebbles of rainwater splatter the pavement

the bars and pubs, packed with people
who pile out unsteadily
at once

late in the night and alone
while strolling, i feel
so removed from it all

people wait all week for this,
to connect with others
with help from various substances

i don’t find it such an easy task
substances are not a choice
i can make anymore.
