Boyfriend’s Mother

By Ishita Uppadhayay

Who loved you first, green-eyes?
Pearl-like sparkle, baby twinkling
In white, wrapped, held,
Adored, so grateful for you

To be born and change her life,
Literal, metaphorical, monumental,
Imagining her: I am her,
Her solid arms, the warmth she imparts
You’re her viscera, extension and invention,
Knowing your love is seeing layers of hers
Matryoshka dolls, women look to other women
Like a mirror unreversed
