My Friend Is Not My Friend

By Mercy Leshi

I have a friend that makes me question who a “friend” is. She writes me lengthy love letters, tells me
long, long tales of her experiences everytime she can. She communicates her belief in me and has a
projection of me that sometimes baffles even me. She understands my heart and would do anything to
soothe my pain on low days. She speaks, speaks and speaks of how deeply she is in love with me – who I
am and most importantly, the version of me she won’t give up on until I become.

Sometimes, it awes me that someone has such an in-depth understanding of me – and no, she doesn’t
know my best food, preferred colours, or adored fantasies but she knows the kind of books I love, my
potential and abilities, the best-fitting word to say to me on gloomy days and she knows who I love –
herself being one. She’s a being that has mastered my heart, loves my soul and honours the spirit of God
in me.

Oftentimes, I wonder if other people have a friend like mine but I found out not so many do. Only few
persons in life get the privilege of having a sister, teacher, motivator, and life partner in one personality.
Life is beautiful with friends that are not just friends. My friend is not my friend – she’s a beam of hope
and my chosen recipient of all my love.
