I was freeloading

By Lux Katz

Words so pretty I fell to my knees
Dared to take a twisted turn
And ended my blooming rosemary
But oh, a sweet girl wasn’t for me to have
These broken chords are what’s in me
4 a.m, still awake, a pen in my hand
What’s suffocating me was the pillow I held close to my chest
Did you know my shift was worth a penny?
Every stolen glance you gave, I don’t dare look back
The chandelier that shines for everyone,
You sat there and watched from the distance
Again I turned my head and a shadow trailed behind
One that looked a lot like someone I knew
Traces of you made me arch my thoughts
Three months – I felt the guilt you promised me
Your favorite violin was a tune I imagined in my head
But oh, a sweet girl was for me to chase
I could never keep the flowers you collected
Regret me all over again
‘Cause we are two different people
Made of two different cities
